Electric bus caught fire and emitted dangerous smoke in Aarhus
A fire broke out in an electric bus in Aarhus, causing concern over dangerous smoke emissions, but the situation has since been controlled and the area is safe again.
On Wednesday, a fire erupted in an electric bus at an intersection in western Aarhus, as confirmed by Søren Møller, the operations chief from the East Jutland Fire Department, in a statement to TV 2 Østjylland. The bus was located at the junction of Hasle Ringvej and Viborgvej, where multiple fire units were deployed to address the incident. The cause of the fire was identified as overheating batteries, which produced harmful smoke that raised health alarms in the vicinity, prompting a warning from local authorities.
Earlier in the day, the East Jutland Police issued a public safety message about the situation, noting that the smoke was hazardous to health, leading residents in the area between Viborgvej and Jernaldervej to be advised to stay indoors and close their doors. However, by 1:05 PM, the police retracted this warning, stating that the fire was under control and posed no further risk of harmful smoke inhalation. Residents were then permitted to resume their outdoor activities without concern.
This incident highlights the potential hazards associated with electric vehicle batteries, specifically under conditions that lead to overheating. Responses from emergency services were prompt and effective, as they attempted to cool the batteries throughout the day. The swift resolution of the situation mitigated what could have been a more serious public health risk in the residential area, and it emphasizes the importance of safety protocols surrounding electric vehicles in urban environments.
