VSAT: thirteen days without registering illegal migrants
Lithuanian border authorities report that there have been no illegal migrants registered for thirteen days, as neighboring Poland and Latvia reinforce their border checks.
Lithuanian border authorities disclosed that there have been no illegal migrants recorded for a consecutive thirteen-day period. This information comes as both Poland and Latvia strengthen their border controls, aiming to manage the flow of illegal immigration. Notably, on a Wednesday, Latvian border guards stated that they had turned back seven illegal migrants attempting to cross their borders. These measures reflect ongoing efforts in the region to address the concerns raised by the surges of migrants from Belarus.
Over the past year, Lithuanian officials had prevented over 1,600 individuals from illegally entering the country from Belarus. This trend has notably decreased in the current year, with only 37 illegal migrants apprehended so far. In total, since the onset of the migration crisis instigated by Belarus, Lithuania has blocked approximately 24,600 illegal migrants from entering. The crisis has highlighted the strains on border security and immigration policies within the European Union, pushing neighboring countries to take more drastic measures to fend off illegal crossings.
The migrant influx into Eastern European Union countries has been particularly significant since 2021, when Western countries accused the Minsk regime of orchestrating this crisis. The geopolitical implications of this situation remain tense, as Western nations continue to scrutinize Belarus's actions and border policies. In light of these developments, the collaboration among the Baltic States regarding border security measures is seen as critical in curbing illegal migration while ensuring regional stability.
