Father and son arrested received more than 90 stolen cattle in MS, says police

A father and son duo in Brazil were arrested for receiving stolen cattle and have been implicated in a larger theft ring according to police reports.

Brazil's civil police arrested a father and son, aged 60 and 34, for receiving approximately 94 stolen cattle from farms in the Nova Andradina region of Mato Grosso do Sul. This case highlights the ongoing issue of cattle theft, known as abigeato, which involves the illegal taking of livestock from rural properties. The police investigation, led by Delegate Caio Bicalho, reveals a network of cattle theft involving various individuals who are separately implicated but contributed to the scheme by supplying stolen animals to the father and son.

The justice system has granted preventive detention for both the father and son, who now face charges of receiving stolen property and unlawful possession of a firearm. Additionally, two men aged 43 and 50 have been identified as the direct perpetrators of the cattle thefts but are currently responding to the charges while at liberty. This situation demonstrates the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating such crimes and the need for continued vigilance in rural areas where livestock theft is prevalent.

This incident occurs within a broader context of increasing concerns over agricultural crime in Brazil, particularly in regions with significant cattle ranching activities. As the authorities work to dismantle these criminal networks, it is imperative to address both the immediate legal ramifications for those involved as well as the implications for the farming community that suffers from cattle theft, hampering their livelihoods and threatening the stability of the agricultural sector in the region.
