In one element we are still in 'baby diapers', but Latvian young biathletes are already reaping laurels
Latvian young biathletes achieved significant success at the World Youth and Junior Biathlon Championships in Germany, winning seven medals in total.
At the World Youth and Junior Biathlon Championships held in Germany at the end of February and early March, Latvian athletes excelled by securing a total of seven medals, establishing themselves alongside biathlon powerhouses Norway and France in the medal rankings. Despite this remarkable achievement, coach Kārlis Vanags remarked that the team is still in the early stages of development, akin to being in 'baby diapers', and highlights the need for continuous growth and improvement in certain aspects of the sport.
Sixteen-year-old Rihards Lozbers stood out by winning four medals, three of which came from individual events in the youth (U-19) category. He claimed gold in the 12.5 km individual race, silver in the 7.5 km sprint, and another silver in the 12 km mass start event. Lozbers also contributed to a significant team victory, helping the Latvian squad clinch the gold medal in the mixed relay event in the junior (U-21) competition alongside teammates Matīss Meirāns, Elza Bleidele, and Estere Volfa.
Estere Volfa also showcased her talent by winning two individual medals in the junior (U-21) competition, further bolstering Latvia's standing in international biathlon. This successful performance at such a prestigious event signals a promising future for Latvian biathlon, underscoring the potential of these young athletes and the importance of ongoing support and development in the sport as they aim to reach new heights on the world stage.
