Latvian athlete Rihards Lozbers won a gold medal in the individual 12.5 km event at the World Youth Biathlon Championships held in Germany.

Rihards Lozbers, a 16-year-old Latvian athlete, secured a gold medal at the World Youth Biathlon Championships held in Germany, triumphing in the 12.5 kilometer individual event. Competing in the under-19 category, Lozbers demonstrated remarkable skill despite facing some challenges; he missed three targets during the prone shooting segment but maintained perfect accuracy while standing, although he incurred a penalty of two minutes and 15 seconds for his misses. His speed on skis proved to be his advantage, finishing approximately two minutes ahead of his closest competitors.

Lozbers completed the race with a final time of 38 minutes and 21.2 seconds, despite the penalties, outperforming a competitive field of 117 athletes. The silver medal went to Ukrainian Tarass Tarasyuk, who made two shooting errors and finished 54.5 seconds behind Lozbers, while Bulgarian Georgy Djorgov took the bronze despite three mistakes and more than three minutes lag, leaving French competitor Nanss Madelen just two tenths of a second shy of a medal. Other Latvian competitors, including Rudolfs Raudziņš, also participated, with Raudziņš failing to hit four targets and finishing in 21st place.

This achievement highlights not only Lozbers’ personal skill and determination but also marks a significant moment for Latvia in international biathlon, showcasing the nation's emerging talent in winter sports. As young athletes like Lozbers gain international recognition, it could pave the way for greater support and development of sports in Latvia, especially in the winter disciplines where the competition is increasingly robust.
