Government analyzes new proposal for construction of a tunnel at the Gate of Hell after environmental debate in MT
The government of Mato Grosso is reviewing a proposal for a 170-meter tunnel construction at the Gate of Hell, aimed at improving infrastructure despite environmental concerns.
The State Secretary of Infrastructure and Logistics (Sinfra-MT) has announced it is evaluating a bid proposal for constructing a 170-meter tunnel in the Portão do Inferno area along the MT-251 highway, which connects Cuiabá to Chapada dos Guimarães. This decision follows a recent public session held on the 9th, where the proposal was put forth by the TB-ETEL Consortium, which comprises several companies including Toniolo, Busnello, and Etel Estudos Técnicos. The bid evaluation process will include the qualification of the participating firms and the assessment of their proposed costs.
The proposed tunnel will feature a concrete roadway and additional shoulder space to facilitate traffic flow. This infrastructure project is part of broader government efforts to enhance connectivity in the region, but it has also drawn attention due to environmental considerations surrounding the area, which is notable for its natural beauty and ecological significance. The construction and design responsibilities will be managed by the winning company under an integrated contracting model, which underscores the need for thorough planning and execution.
As the state government moves forward with the tunnel proposal, it must balance the urgent infrastructure needs of the growing traffic demand with the environmental integrity of the region known for its landscapes and biodiversity. Stakeholders, including local communities and environmental groups, may closely monitor this project as discussions about transportation development and ecological preservation continue to gain importance in Brazilian society.
