Self-defense project helped over a thousand women in SP in 2025

A self-defense project in São Paulo has successfully trained over 1,130 women, exceeding its initial target for the year.

In 2025, the "Defenda-se" project, organized by the Brazilian Institute for Attention and Integral Protection of Victims (Pró-Vítima) in collaboration with the Paulo Kobayashi Institute, provided free self-defense training to women in São Paulo. Originally aiming to assist 640 women, the program surpassed its expectations with a total of 1,130 women receiving training between April and December. The program is set to continue this year, although dates have yet to be announced.

The initiative not only focused on self-defense techniques but also included education on women's rights, psychological support, and rehabilitation for survivors of violence. Out of those interested in learning self-defense, 279 women signed up for the classes, which were held for free at the Dom Orione Educational Center. Training was conducted by Débora Lima, a Taekwondo master known for empowering women through martial arts.

The success of this project highlights the increasing need for women's self-defense education in Brazil, particularly in urban areas where violence against women can be prevalent. As indicated by the president of Pró-Vítima, the program is crucial for building confidence among women and equipping them with the skills necessary to protect themselves in potentially dangerous situations.
