Emergencies in Guayas due to rains: bridge collapse in Balao and overflowing rivers and canals in other cantons
Heavy rains in Guayas, Ecuador have led to emergencies, including a bridge collapse in Balao and overflowing rivers in various cantons.
Recent heavy rainfall in Guayas province, Ecuador, has caused multiple emergencies across the region. Among the most severe incidents reported was the collapse of a bridge in the cantΓ³n of Balao, triggered by the overflowing of a nearby river. Local authorities, including the Prefecture, received alerts from residents early in the morning, prompting immediate action to assess the situation and implement safety measures.
The Municipal government deployed equipment to inspect the affected areas and coordinate response efforts. The Risk Management Unit activated emergency protocols to evaluate damages and ensure the safety of residents. In Balao, the rising water levels and the detachment of debris damaged the main water pipeline that crosses the bridge, leading the municipality to announce a cut in potable water service while repairs are underway.
Carlos Cuesta, the director of Risk Management for the Prefecture, highlighted that teams have been mobilized to respond to the still-evolving situation as additional rainfall is anticipated. The situation remains critical, with authorities continuing to monitor water levels in rivers and canals to prevent further damage and ensure community safety.
