The icebreaker 'Varma' has served 148 ships in the Gulf of Riga so far
The icebreaker 'Varma' has managed to assist 148 ships in the Gulf of Riga since the start of ice navigation this season.
The icebreaker 'Varma' has been actively servicing vessels in the Gulf of Riga since the onset of ice navigation, having assisted a total of 148 ships as of March 9. According to the Freeport of Riga authorities, the ice navigation is still ongoing, and the 'Varma' continues to operate under the directions of the port's captain. Despite the arrival of spring and warming temperatures, the presence of ice remains a significant challenge for shipping in the area.
Ice accumulations are cited as the primary issue hindering shipping routes, as conditions change with the wind. The port authorities have to adapt the shipping lanes dynamically based on the current conditions within the Gulf. As the situation remains precarious, it's difficult for the authorities to predict when the ice navigation will officially conclude, as this is heavily influenced by weather conditions and wind direction.
With ongoing operations, the icebreaker 'Varma' is set to continue its crucial role this week, having begun its current season of ice-breaking on February 4, upon the captain of the port's order. The last similar mission for 'Varma' took place during the winter of 2018, highlighting its importance in maintaining navigability for shipping in the Gulf during icy conditions.
