THE GLACIER "VARMA" RETURNS TO THE RIGA GULF AFTER SEVERAL YEARS OF BREAK
The icebreaker "Varma" has resumed its mission in the Riga Gulf after a several-year hiatus, facing challenging ice conditions this winter.
After several years of inactivity, the icebreaker 'Varma' has returned to its ice-breaking mission in the Riga Gulf. The ship made a brief stop at the port for rest before heading back out to sea, with the crew facing particularly difficult conditions for navigation this winter due to thick ice. Senior helmsman Ivars Jonāns remarked on the challenging nature of their work, highlighting the need to wear thick suits and the rarity of wearing white shirts, reserved for special occasions such as their brief return to port.
Currently, the ice in the Riga Gulf is up to 35 centimeters thick, with ice pressure ridges forming in various areas due to wind effects, complicating the icebreaker’s work. Kaspars Ozoliņš, a board member of 'LVR flot' explained that the situation at sea is extremely challenging, with ships frequently getting stuck in the ice. This necessitates a meticulous approach to navigation and operation within these hazardous conditions.
The crew is well-prepared for their mission, ensuring they have enough fuel, drinking water, and supplies for ten days at sea. Their critical work helps maintain maritime traffic in the region and is especially vital during winter months when ice can severely disrupt shipping routes. Overall, the return of the 'Varma' is not only a significant logistical operation but also comes with a sense of pride and dedication amongst the crew who are fully aware of the challenges ahead.
