VIDEO: Icebreaker 'Varma' Leads a 11-Ship Long Convoy This Season
The icebreaker 'Varma' has assisted 81 ships so far this season and recently led an 11-ship convoy across the Gulf of Riga amid challenging ice conditions.
The icebreaker 'Varma' was put to work in the Gulf of Riga on February 4 of this year, serving a critical role in aiding ships navigating through icy waters. According to the management of the Riga Free Port, 'Varma' has serviced 81 ships by escorting them on their journeys and freeing those trapped in ice. The vessel operates in cycles of ten days, returning to shore for replenishment, and has been actively working in the Gulf for 15 days so far this season.
The longest ship convoy this winter, consisting of 11 vessels, was led by 'Varma' across the Gulf, showcasing its importance in ensuring maritime operations during harsh winter conditions. Port authorities predict that the icebreaker will continue its operations at sea for another month, but warn that rising temperatures could complicate the ice conditions further. In comparison, during the milder winter of 2018, 'Varma' operated at sea from February 24 to April 3.
Currently, 'Varma' faces particularly challenging conditions in the Gulf, the toughest in the last 15 years. The management noted that similar tough ice situations have been observed by colleagues in the Estonian fleet, underscoring the broader regional impacts of current weather patterns on maritime activities. This highlights the significant role of icebreakers like 'Varma' in facilitating shipping and navigation during extreme winter weather.
