Icebreaker 'Varma' has assisted 17 ships this winter
The icebreaker 'Varma' has provided assistance to 17 ships navigating to and from the port of Riga this winter, marking its first operation outside the port area since 2018.
The icebreaker 'Varma' has been operational outside the Riga port area for the first time since 2018, working under instructions from the port's captain to assist vessels encountering ice. So far this winter, 'Varma' has helped 17 ships by clearing ice pathways or providing assistance to those that have become icebound. Meanwhile, another icebreaker, 'Laura,' continues to operate within the port area, ensuring safe navigation around docks and buoys.
As winter progresses, the thickness of the ice outside the Riga port ranges from 10 to 30 centimeters, with significantly thicker ice accumulations exceeding one meter in places. The operational capabilities of 'Varma' are reportedly adequate for handling the current ice conditions, as described by a representative from the LVR Flote. The icebreaker is currently on a ten-day mission equipped with essential supplies, including fuel and food for the crew, and is expected to return to shore upon the mission's completion.
Maintenance of the icebreaker is a continuous process, according to OzoliΕΕ‘, who noted that 'Varma' is kept heated throughout the autumn, winter, and spring seasons to ensure operational readiness for any ice navigation challenges that may arise. This proactive approach to maintenance emphasizes the importance of the icebreaker in maintaining maritime safety as shipping activities continue in icy conditions.
