Indore to Omkareshwar Now in Half the Time, 3 Tunnels Being Built with ₹1000 Crore
The journey between Indore and Omkareshwar will soon be transformed with the construction of three advanced tunnels aimed at improving travel time and safety.
The economic capital of Madhya Pradesh, Indore, is set to have its connectivity with Khandwa enhanced significantly with the construction of a four-lane road spanning 33.40 kilometers. This project is noteworthy due to the three modern tunnels being constructed to alleviate risks associated with the Bhairughati, Baigram, and Choral Ghat areas. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is overseeing this initiative, employing advanced methodologies like the New Australian Tunneling Method (NATM) and electronic blasting techniques to tackle the unique challenges of the valley region.
The Bhairughati tunnel will stretch 575 meters, complemented by a spectacular viaduct, while the Baigram tunnel is planned at 480 meters and the Choral Ghat tunnel at 550 meters. Collectively, these tunnels will span a total of 1.8 kilometers, effectively bypassing sharp bends and hilly terrains, ensuring that the travel experience becomes safer and more efficient.
Currently, the journey from Indore to Omkareshwar can take anywhere between 2.5 to 3 hours due to heavy traffic and poor road conditions. This new infrastructure is designed to reduce travel time significantly, making it feasible for travelers to reach Omkareshwar in half the time, thereby not only improving accessibility but also enhancing the potential for tourism in the region.
