The Indian government is set to approve the construction of a significant underwater road-rail tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River, linking Gohpur on the north bank to Numaligarh on the south bank in Assam. This infrastructure project, which is expected to cost between ₹18600 to 19000 crores, will be India's first dual-purpose tunnel combining both roadway and railway access. The project aims at enhancing connectivity and transportation efficiency in the northeastern region, which is of strategic importance considering its proximity to China and other neighboring countries.

The proposed tunnel is not merely an engineering feat but a vital element in bolstering India’s defense and logistical capabilities in the volatile northeastern sector. As Assam shares its borders with China to the north and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the south, rapid deployment of military resources and supplies is crucial. Former Director General of the Border Road Organization, Lieutenant General Rajiv Chaudhary (Retd), highlights that creating this tunnel will not only facilitate quicker movement of the armed forces but will also integrate the northeastern states with the national mainstream, enhancing regional development.

The central cabinet is expected to grant approval for the project soon, indicating the government's commitment to infrastructural development in areas that are significant for both national security and economic growth. This strategic project reflects India's efforts to secure its borders more effectively while providing improved connectivity for civilians and military alike, recognizing the growing economic and geopolitical challenges in the region.
