Final Test of the Second Phase of Indore Metro Completed, Commercial Journey to Start Soon
The second phase of the Indore Metro project has completed its final test, with commercial operations expected to begin shortly after receiving clearance from the safety commissioner.
In Indore, the economic capital of Madhya Pradesh, the countdown for the second phase of the Metro Rail project has officially begun. The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) reported that a detailed inspection of the 17.5-kilometer priority corridor was conducted by the Metro Rail Safety Commissioner (CMRS) team from March 15 to 18, 2026. This inspection assessed various aspects of the project, including station management, passenger amenities, speed, braking systems, signaling, and emergency protocols.
The initial commercial operations for a 6-kilometer stretch of the metro priority corridor commenced on May 31, 2025, indicating that the metro service is on track for expansion as further evaluations and tests conclude. MPMRCL's Managing Director, S. Krishna Chaitanya, indicated that the ability to start commercial operations for the second phase is contingent upon receiving a green light from the CMRS, which is expected soon, thus paving the way for improved public transportation in the region.
The overall plan foresees the construction of a comprehensive 31.32-kilometer metro corridor at a projected cost of ₹7500.8 crores, laying the groundwork for enhanced connectivity in Indore. The construction work for this ambitious project started in 2019, and officials are optimistic about its contribution to urban mobility and economic growth as it evolves towards completion.
