In Hanam City, South Korea, significant progress has been made in the removal of overhead power lines and utility poles around the Shinjang traditional market, which were previously likened to a spider web. The city announced that starting on October 10, they have formally initiated the critical phase of the undergrounding project by commencing utility pole removals. This project, which began construction in August 2024, includes installing underground passageways for electrical infrastructure. Over the next few weeks, 24 utility poles and 3 telecommunication poles will be systematically removed over a distance of about 500 meters, with the entire overhead line removal expected to be completed by the end of the month with a total project cost of 6 billion won.

The completion of this undergrounding project will dramatically improve pedestrian access, particularly for individuals using strollers or wheelchairs, as the elimination of utility poles will free up sidewalk space. Additionally, this initiative is expected to mitigate fire hazards that have previously posed a concern in this traditionally bustling market area, ultimately enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the neighborhood. Such improvements are anticipated to have a positive impact on local business activity, invigorating the market's commerce as a safer environment attracts more visitors.

The city plans to implement an annual roadmap for undergrounding major roads in the old town, starting with the Shinjang area, and aims to begin additional phases of construction soon, including travel routes around Namhan High School and the Deokpung Market area in the following years. To engage the local community, a resident briefing session was held prior to the demolition, attended by Mayor Lee Hyun-jae, city and provincial council members, merchants, and around 100 local residents, demonstrating a collaborative effort to share the project's benefits and updates with stakeholders.
