NBF eyes six gold medals at Commonwealth Games
The Nigeria Boxing Federation aims to win six gold medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and is preparing 40 boxers as candidates for the final team selection.
The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has set an ambitious goal of securing six gold medals at the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. This announcement comes as the federation prepares to begin its camping and assessment phase, which will see 40 boxers training and evaluated to determine the final ten representatives for the competition. The NBF's Vice President, Omonlei Imadu, expressed confidence in achieving this goal and emphasized the importance of this event for Nigeria's boxing future.
During the closing of five days of open trials held at the Brai Ayonote Boxing Complex in Surulere, Lagos, Imadu indicated that while the target is focused on gold medals, they are also open to winning silver and bronze as part of their overall medal count of ten. The focus has now shifted to the camping phase, which is deemed essential for the athletesβ preparation. Imadu articulated that the goal is to ensure that the selected boxers are in peak condition not only during the camp but also for the actual competition in Glasgow.
The 40 boxers moving into the camping phase include 20 finalists from the trials (10 male and 10 female), alongside 20 additional boxers who will participate in the training. This initiative illustrates the NBF's commitment to fostering talent and enhancing Nigeria's presence in international boxing competitions. Imadu's leadership is pivotal in driving motivation and setting a clear vision for success at the Commonwealth Games, representing a significant investment in the nation's sporting future.
