Nigeria’s Commonwealth Games boxing squad emerges
Nigeria has announced its boxing team for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, consisting of ten boxers following recent trials in Lagos.
Nigeria has confirmed its 10-member boxing squad for the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow, Scotland. This announcement follows the open trials conducted at the Brai Ayonote Boxing Complex in the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, which took place over four days and saw participation from 128 boxers, including 121 men and 27 women, competing in ten different weight categories. The trials were organized by the Nigeria Boxing Federation, with champions securing spots on the national team.
Among the standout performers during the trials was UK-based Patricia Mbata, who won gold in the women’s 70kg category. Her victory ensures her place on the team, a point of pride for the Nigerian boxing community, especially after receiving encouragement from former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, who had sent her a motivational video message earlier in the week. Other female boxers making the squad include Udoette Happiness (51kg), Ajishola Kadijat (57kg), Sodipe Damilola (65kg), and Edoka Celestine (+70kg).
The men’s team includes qualifiers Ogunremi Michael (55kg), Wahab Abdurrahman (65kg), Folly Hassan (70kg), and two others still unnamed. With these selections, the Nigeria Boxing Federation aims to strengthen its presence at the Commonwealth Games, highlighting the underlying potential in the nation’s boxing talent and the significance of these athletes representing Nigeria on an international stage.
