Nigeria intensifies athletics training for Commonwealth Games

Nigeria's track and field athletes are intensifying their training in preparation for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, now focusing on event-specific drills in Asaba.

Nigeria’s athletics team has ramped up its preparations for the Commonwealth Games, which are set to take place from July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow, Scotland. The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) recently inaugurated a six-week training camp in Asaba, Delta State, which includes a mix of experienced athletes and emerging talent. The camp has now entered its second week, with the athletes transitioning from general conditioning to more specialized training tailored to their events.

As the camp progresses, 18 athletes and 10 officials are honing their skills at the Stephen Keshi Stadium. According to updates from the AFN media department, the focus is now on increasing the intensity of event-specific drills, catering to the varying requirements of sprinters, jumpers, throwers, and hurdlers. The emphasis on specialized training is pivotal for the athletes as they approach the competitive season, aiming to excel in their respective events at the Commonwealth Games.

AFN head coach Solomon Aliyu has expressed contentment with the training progress, stressing the importance of maintaining focus and structure throughout the camp. The preparation is structured into three phases, which marks a strategic approach to ensure that Nigerian athletes are well-prepared and competitive against their counterparts from other countries. This rigorous training regimen represents the nation's commitment to achieving success in Glasgow, especially after prior performances in international competitions.
