IWD 2026: POWA supports 100 widows, officers’ wives in Gombe

The Police Officers' Wives Association in Gombe State has provided food and cash support to 100 widows and wives of police officers in celebration of the 2026 International Women's Day.

On Monday, the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) in Gombe State, Nigeria, took significant steps to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day by supporting 100 widows and the wives of lower cadre police officers. The initiative aligned with the global theme of International Women’s Day, which emphasizes "Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls," showcasing a commitment to advocacy for women’s rights and equality. As part of the support, beneficiaries received food items such as pasta, rice, and sugar, along with a cash gift of N5,000 each.

During the distribution event, Damaris James, the Secretary of POWA in Gombe State, emphasized the importance of this initiative in demonstrating solidarity and appreciation toward widows of fallen officers and the wives of serving personnel. Many of these women face economic challenges due to the limited earnings of their spouses in the police force. The initiative serves not only as a form of assistance but also as a recognition of the contributions and sacrifices made by police families, especially the widows who need support in challenging times.

The annual celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8 seeks to highlight women’s achievements and catalyze stronger actions in the pursuit of gender equality. POWA’s efforts in Gombe complement global efforts that strive for justice and rights for women and girls everywhere. By extending support to widowed families of police officers, the organization reinforces the essential role that community solidarity plays in improving the lives of those affected by loss and providing them with hope for a better future.
