IWD: FCT health secretariat celebrates women with free surgeries, palliatives

The Health Services and Environment Secretariat in Nigeria has provided free surgical support and palliative care to indigent women as part of its International Women’s Day celebrations.

In a commendable initiative, the Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES) of Nigeria marked International Women’s Day 2026 by offering free surgical procedures and support to underprivileged women at Kuje General Hospital. Led by Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, the Mandate Secretary of HSES, this outreach included surgeries for seven indigent mothers as part of the Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care Programme, reflecting the Federal Ministry of Health's commitment to maternal health.

The move is designed not just as a celebration but also as part of ongoing efforts to alleviate the financial burdens faced by women, particularly in accessing medical care. According to a statement from Bola Ajao, the initiative is intended to reinforce the secretariat’s commitment to improving maternal and family health through targeted interventions. This aligns with the overarching goals of enhancing health services and resources available to vulnerable populations.

During her visit, Dr. Fasawe emphasized that the initiative aligns with the 2026 theme for International Women’s Day, “Give to Gain”, thereby promoting the importance of giving support to women in need. As the world observes this day, actions such as these are critical in addressing health inequalities and empowering mothers, ensuring they receive necessary medical assistance without the financial strain, thereby advancing the cause of gender equality and health for all women.
