Gombe First Lady announces 200 bank accounts for GBV survivors

The First Lady of Gombe State has announced a new initiative to establish 200 bank accounts aimed at supporting survivors of Gender-Based Violence during the International Women’s Day celebration.

During the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration in Gombe, the First Lady, Asma’u Muhammadu-Yahaya, emphasized the crucial role women play in promoting a stable and progressive society. She highlighted that the celebration is a reminder for society to reaffirm support for women in fostering peaceful families. In her representation by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Asma’u Iganus, the emphasis was on women's contributions to society and the need for their empowerment.

In light of the importance of these issues, Asma’u Muhammadu-Yahaya announced a significant initiative by the Gombe State Government aimed at aiding survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). The initiative includes the establishment of 200 bank accounts that are set to provide financial support for these survivors, allowing them a means to rehabilitate and reintegrate into society. This announcement marks a progressive step towards recognizing and addressing the impacts of GBV among women in the region.

The initiative also reflects a larger commitment from the Gombe State Government towards the rehabilitation of victims of GBV and the advocacy for women’s rights. By taking this step, the government is showcasing its priorities in promoting not just gender equality but also ensuring that victims of violence receive necessary support and resources. This initiative could serve as a model for other states in Nigeria to create similar programs aimed at protecting and empowering women.
