This country has advanced ahead of India in the arms race, Russia still ranks first in the supplier list

India is ranked second in the world for arms imports, according to a recent SIPRI report, while Ukraine leads the list.

India remains the second-largest arms importer in the world, holding an 8.2% share of global arms imports, according to the latest report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Ukraine currently ranks first with 9.7%, driven by its ongoing conflict. The data underscores India's continued efforts to modernize its military despite a slight decrease in arms procurement compared to previous years.

From 2019 to 2023, India was the top arms importer with a 9.8% share, a figure that has since reduced. The primary reason for this shift is attributed to India's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' or self-reliant India initiative, which focuses on domestic arms manufacturing. As companies like HAL and DRDO, as well as private firms, ramp up production capabilities, the reliance on foreign imports is being lowered, leading to the current trend in arms procurement.

Despite India's reduction in arms imports, Russia continues to be the leading supplier to India, maintaining its position in the global arms market. This indicates that while India is making strides towards self-sufficiency in defense production, it still depends significantly on existing partnerships with suppliers like Russia to meet its military needs.
