Ukraine takes one-tenth of global arms imports in 2021-2025
Ukraine has become the world's largest importer of major arms, accounting for nearly 10% of global imports from 2021 to 2025.
Ukraine has emerged as the world's leading importer of major arms, taking a significant share of 9.7% of global arms imports between 2021 and 2025, according to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). This marks a striking increase from just 0.1% of global imports during the 2016-2020 period, highlighting the drastic changes in Ukraine's defense needs amidst ongoing conflict and geopolitical tensions.
The United States has played a pivotal role in this dramatic shift, serving as Ukraine's largest supplier, responsible for 41% of the arms delivered to the country. Germany and Poland also contributed to Ukraine's arms imports, with shares of 14% and 9.4% respectively. This increase in arms importation reflects not only Ukraine's urgent military needs but also the broader global trends in defense spending and arms distribution, particularly in response to the war with Russia.
In comparison, other major arms importers have also seen varied shifts in their respective shares of global deliveries. India ranks second with an 8.2% share, while Saudi Arabia follows in third place with 6.8%. This report underscores a changing landscape of global arms trade and serves as a critical indicator of defense priorities as countries respond to shifting security threats, particularly in Eastern Europe and across the globe.
