Research Center: Europe is the Largest Arms Importer in the World, and America Increases Its Exports

A new report indicates that Europe has become the world’s largest arms importer due to the Ukraine-Russia war and diminished trust in U.S. security commitments.

According to a recent report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Europe has emerged as the largest arms importer globally over the past five years, attributed to the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict and a waning confidence in the United States' security guarantees. The report highlights that arms imports by European nations have more than tripled between 2021 and 2025 compared to the preceding five years. This increase is largely driven by the necessity to supply Ukraine with military equipment to bolster its defenses against Russia.

The data shows that Europe's share of global arms imports has surged to 33%, a significant increase from the 12% recorded in the previous five years. Matthew George, director of the institute's arms transfer program, remarked that the sharp rise in arms flows to European countries has contributed to an overall increase of approximately 10% in global arms transfers. Despite European nations ramping up their domestic arms production, there remains a strong demand for U.S. weapons, particularly fighter jets and long-range air defense systems.

In contrast, the report also noted a decline in arms imports from Middle Eastern countries, which fell by 13%. This shift underscores not only a changing global landscape in military procurement but also reflects the evolving geopolitical tensions and strategic alliances, especially with the backdrop of the conflict in Ukraine, which continues to reshape military supply chains and defense strategies across continents.
