Police are investigating illegally felled oak trees

Since 2021, old oak trees have been illegally cut down along a bike path in Sønderris, leading Esbjerg Municipality to report the unauthorized removals to the police.

In Sønderris, Denmark, a significant environmental violation has been reported, with old oak trees being illegally felled along a bike path since 2021. Esbjerg Municipality has taken action to address the issue by notifying the police about these unauthorized cuttings. According to a statement from Syd- og Sønderjyllands Politi, the illegal activity raises concerns regarding the protection of local flora and the need for community safety measures around public lands.

The investigation indicates that approximately 15 to 20 years old oak trees have been removed from municipal land without the necessary permissions. The police now have aerial photographic evidence, which shows one of the trees was cut down during the spring-summer period of 2025, and three others have also been tracked as illegally felled between spring 2021 and spring 2022. These specific trees have circumferences ranging between 144 to 200 centimeters, indicating their age and the environmental value they held.

Police Commissioner Morten Aslev Skaarup has stated that such mature oak trees are considered very valuable, and the case is currently being investigated as vandalism. The implications of this incident extend beyond legal repercussions; they also highlight the need for stricter regulations and enforcement against such ecological crimes to preserve natural heritage in the region.
