Ornithologists report tree felled with eagle nest

An eagle nest tree has been felled near Skælskør, prompting a police report from DOF Birdlife, as the species is protected in Denmark.

A recent incident has raised alarm among conservationists as a tree housing a sea eagle nest was cut down near Orebyvej east of Skælskør, Denmark. The Danish Ornithological Society (DOF Birdlife) has reported the incident to the police, emphasizing that this was the only tree in the area that was taken down and is likely indicative of a willful act against wildlife preservation. The organization stated that the nesting sea eagles were known to be present in the small forest and the nest was visible from a public road, suggesting that the responsible parties were aware of the nest's existence.

Sea eagles are a protected species in Denmark, and the population was recorded at 181 pairs last year, marking a successful comeback since they were reintroduced as a breeding species in 1995 after an absence of 83 years. The act of cutting down the tree not only violates the hunting and wildlife management law, which prohibits intentional damage to bird nests, but it also raises concerns about the safety of the nesting sea eagle, especially as the female was ready to lay eggs. This incident underlines the ongoing struggle between wildlife protection and human activities that threaten their habitats.

DOF Birdlife's project leader, Kim Skelmose, expressed grave concern in a press release about the deliberate felling of the tree at such a critical time for the nesting sea eagles. The organization is not only advocating for the investigation of this incident but also calling for increased awareness of the legal protections in place for nesting birds and their habitats. The tree's removal serves as a critical reminder of the fragile balance between nature conservation and human interference, emphasizing the need for stricter enforcement of wildlife protection laws in Denmark and continued public education about the importance of biodiversity.
