Criminals fell trees on the road to prevent inspections and are arrested for illegal logging in MT

Two men were arrested for illegal logging and obstructing a police investigation in Nova Ubiratã, Brazil, after they felled trees to prevent police access.

In Nova Ubiratã, Brazil, two men, both aged 52, were arrested after they obstructed roads to prevent police vehicles from accessing the area during a crackdown on illegal logging. This incident occurred on June 16 in the Estação Ecológica Rio Ronuro, where law enforcement found evidence of illegal logging activities, including felled trees obstructing the path of police vehicles. The police operation began early in the morning after authorities noticed tracks from motorcycles and tractors leading into the conservation area. After trekking for approximately 12 kilometers through the protected forest, officers discovered fallen trees deliberately placed to block access and lots of freshly cut timber in a clearing, pointing to extensive illegal logging operations in the ecological station. During the investigation, the police confiscated a black tractor and a front-loader fitted with a fork, further solidifying the evidence against the suspects. They now face serious charges, including destruction of native or planted forests, damage to conservation units, and criminal association, highlighting ongoing environmental concerns in the region and the challenges police face combating such crimes.
