More than 1,000 people affected by flooding in Muisne, in southern Esmeraldas
Severe rains have caused flooding in several communities of Muisne, Ecuador, affecting over 1,000 residents in emergency situations.
On March 8th, severe rains in Muisne, southern Esmeraldas, triggered significant flooding, displacing over 1,000 residents across various communities in the rural parish of San Gregorio. The overflow of the Canuto and Sucio rivers has resulted in an emergency situation, particularly impacting areas such as Balsalito, Zapote, Contreras, Aguas Claras, La Colorada, Boca del Sucio, and San Jacinto. Reports of landslides and inundated homes underscore the severity of the weather conditions.
The local municipal authorities confirmed the emergency declarations, and Muisne's mayor, Yuri Colorado Márquez, has mobilized the municipal Risk Management team to assess damages and coordinate immediate relief efforts for affected families. This proactive response highlights the need for effective disaster management protocols in areas prone to natural disasters, particularly given the increased frequency of extreme weather events linked to climate change.
The situation remains dynamic as assessments continue and further rains are anticipated, raising concerns about the potential for worsening conditions. As communities begin to recover, the focus will shift to long-term solutions to mitigate flooding risks and strengthen infrastructure, underscoring the importance of sustainable planning in vulnerable regions of Ecuador.
