About 70 families affected by the rains in Esmeraldas await help

Severe rainfall in Esmeraldas has impacted around 70 families, leading to flooded homes and calls for structural interventions to prevent further mudslides.

Intense rainfall in Esmeraldas on Monday resulted in significant flooding, leaving at least 70 families affected across various neighborhoods in the provincial capital. The ensuing accumulation of mud and stagnant water has created hazardous living conditions, prompting municipal personnel and machinery to conduct cleanup efforts in critical areas such as El Cabezón. Residents have voiced their concerns regarding the extensive mud that remains on sidewalks, drastically affecting health and mobility in the community.

On Tuesday morning, as the sun emerged, the damp material began to dry, turning into dust that further exacerbated the health issues for the inhabitants. Similar challenges are being faced by families in the Aire Libre Bajo neighborhood, which experiences a constant influx of mud and debris during the rainy season due to its geographical location. These ongoing issues have led residents to demand structural solutions to mitigate the risk of landslides during heavy rains.

The Municipal Director of Public Works, Holger Holguín, indicated that there are two ongoing projects aimed at constructing necessary infrastructure to address these chronic problems. However, the urgency of the situation highlights the immediate need for assistance and support for the affected families, who are struggling to cope with the aftermath of the recent weather events and the potential dangers they pose to their homes and health.
