Intense rains leave more than 124 people affected in Esmeraldas
Heavy rains in Esmeraldas province have left over 124 individuals displaced, affecting numerous families and prompting emergency responses.
In Esmeraldas province, Ecuador, severe rainfall on February 4 has caused significant disruption, impacting more than 80 families and leading to emergency situations particularly in the city of Esmeraldas, as well as the parish of Camarones and the canton of Rioverde. Official reports from the local municipality indicated that 42 families, amounting to 127 individuals, experienced varying degrees of impact, while 46 families—totaling 124 individuals—were left displaced due to the adverse weather conditions.
The torrential rains resulted in multiple emergency incidents, including three major floods and a landslide, with flooding being the most detrimental to local residents. The official assessment noted that individuals aged between 18 and 64 years represented the largest group affected, followed by adolescents and children. This demographic detail emphasizes the widespread vulnerability of community members during such natural disasters, particularly concerning their safety and economic well-being.
In light of the emergency, swift response and assistance efforts were mobilized in collaboration with local organizations and the Emergency Operations Committee (COE) of Esmeraldas. These coordinated actions aim to provide immediate relief and begin the recovery process for those impacted by the calamity, reflecting both the urgency and the community's resilience in the face of natural disasters in Ecuador.
