Snack bar and nine other establishments are closed after the collapse at Jaraguá Market
A popular snack bar and nine other food establishments in Maceió have been shut down due to structural collapse risks at the Jaraguá Market.
After the roof of part of the Jaraguá Market in Maceió collapsed, the city's Civil Defense has closed down a renowned snack bar and nine other food establishments. This measure was enforced following an inspection on Friday, during which engineers found significant risks of further structural failure, leading to the evacuation and prohibition of access to the ten premises.
The inspection revealed alarming signs that necessitated immediate action, resulting in these businesses being barred from operating until safety measures can be confirmed. The affected snack bar, which is located on Avenida Comendador Leão, reportedly continues serving customers from a different area away from the collapsed structures. This has raised concerns about adherence to safety recommendations among local businesses.
Furthermore, the Civil Defense plans to notify the Institute for Rural Development and Supply of Alagoas (Ideral), which is tasked with overseeing operations at the market, to submit a comprehensive demolition plan for the compromised section. The closure remains in effect until it's deemed safe for the establishments to reopen, highlighting ongoing safety concerns regarding public spaces in Maceió.
