Structure collapses, injures elderly man and traps employees in stores on a street in Dirceu; the road is closed

A structure collapsed in Teresina, Brazil, injuring an elderly man and trapping four employees from local stores.

On Tuesday, a partial collapse of the building that houses four stores occurred on the Main Avenue of Dirceu, located in the Southeast zone of Teresina, Brazil. The incident injured a 63-year-old man who was walking by and trapped four employees inside one of the stores. The Fire Department has temporarily closed off the area to assess the safety and impact of the collapse. According to Fire Commander Carvalho, there is currently no confirmation regarding whether customers were inside the affected stores at the time of the collapse.

Eyewitness Adão Campelo da Fonseca reported that he was hit by falling debris while heading to a bus stop. Fortunately, he sustained only minor injuries thanks to the quick action of nearby residents who helped him move away from the area before more debris fell. The area is home to two clothing stores, a fabric shop, and a mobile phone store, with the collapse raising concerns regarding the structural integrity of the building. Local authorities including the electricity company, Equatorial, have been brought in to disconnect power lines that were affected in the incident.

As the situation develops, Sergeant Ramon from the Fire Department stated that engineers would evaluate the structural integrity of the building to assess whether there is a risk of total collapse. The event has stirred local concerns about building safety regulations in the area, prompting discussions about the need for stricter enforcement of safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
