Exhibition 'Dressing Stories' in Petrolina raises awareness about cycles of domestic violence

The 'Dressing Stories' exhibition in Petrolina aims to raise public awareness of gender violence through the display of 100 dresses featuring phrases inspired by real women's experiences.

Starting Saturday, March 7, the 'Dressing Stories' exhibition will take place in Petrolina, located in the Sertão region of Pernambuco, Brazil. The exhibition showcases one hundred dresses displayed in Praça Dom Malan, each adorned with phrases derived from the personal experiences of women who have faced domestic violence. This initiative seeks to transform private struggles, often silenced within homes, into a powerful public message aimed at combatting gender violence.

The exhibition is organized into symbolic blocks that represent common stages in the cycle of domestic violence. It captures the journey from the early stages of seemingly loving relationships, marked by promises and affection, through to the troubling signs of control and jealousy, and escalating to instances of aggression and silence. The later stages of the exhibit focus on awareness, encouragement for victims to speak out, and the importance of community engagement in tackling this pervasive issue.

Following its initial display in Petrolina, the exhibition will move to the Bora Petrolina event in the José e Maria neighborhood on March 14, before making its way to the Municipal Park from March 14 to 20. This initiative not only seeks to educate the public on the dynamics of domestic violence but also aims to foster a culture of support and action against gender-based violence within the community.
