Convicted for the robbery and murder of a lawyer is arrested in Teresina; had been fugitive since 2025

Geison Bernardino de Sousa, convicted of the robbery and murder of lawyer Lílian Sâmara Nunes Barros, was arrested in Teresina after being fugitive for several years.

Geison Bernardino de Sousa, also known as 'Bibi', was arrested on Thursday night in a house in the Matadouro neighborhood, located in the northern zone of Teresina, Brazil. He was convicted for the robbery and murder of 25-year-old lawyer Lílian Sâmara Nunes Barros, a crime that occurred in July 2007. Sousa had originally been sentenced to 46 years in prison in 2008 but escaped from the prison system in 2025 after being granted temporary leave.

According to Colonel Audivan Nunes, the commander of the Special Nature Troops Battalion (BPRone), Sousa had been previously captured in Maranhão after the crime and had served part of his sentence before his escape. Upon his arrest, he was taken to the Central de Flagrantes in Teresina to undergo necessary legal procedures. He is now set to fulfill the remaining sentence of 29 years, 3 months, and 26 days.

The case has drawn attention, especially from the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), highlighting the impact of violent crime within the legal profession. This arrest underscores ongoing challenges related to the management of prisoners in Brazil, particularly concerning those on temporary leave, raising questions about the adequacy of measures in place to prevent recidivism and ensure public safety.
