Vilnius Chief Architect on Developers' Appetite in Pilaitė: 'A Six-Story Wall Next to Cottages Would Not Be Suitable'

A heated discussion among Pilaitė residents arose over a detailed land plan for a 3.2 ha area, which has sparked concerns about development in their beloved park.

For many years, the area known as "Dauba" on Bitėnų Street in Pilaitė served as a cherished park maintained by the local community. However, in the summer of 2020, residents learned that the park's status was not official and the land had been returned to its heirs. This revelation sparked discontent among residents who valued the area for its relaxing nature and community spirit.

Currently, the discussion surrounding the park has intensified with the introduction of a detailed plan for about 3.2 hectares of territory in the Salotės village, proposing the development of four land plots. The project outlines the reconfiguration of the plots through division and consolidation without changing the outer boundaries, which many locals perceive as a potential threat to the character of their neighborhood. During a presentation of the plan on February 24, a passionate debate ensued, attracting nearly 100 community members eager to express their opinions and grievances.

Developers emphasized that the land is private, suggesting that any gestures like granting community use of part of the land would be charitable. However, local residents are concerned that such developments could compromise the tranquil nature of their park, illustrating the tension between private development interests and community preservation. The discussions reflect broader themes of urban development, community rights, and the tension between progress and preservation in urban settings.
