Pilaitė is buzzing: the reclaimed 'depression' is again in danger – plots are being replanned, a neighborhood will be nearby

Residents of Pilaitė are fighting to preserve a green zone threatened by redevelopment plans.

The residents of Pilaitė have been battling for years to protect a beloved green area referred to as 'the depression.' This latest struggle intensified in the summer of 2020 when locals learned that the park along Bitėnų Street had not been officially recognized as a green zone. Instead, the land had been returned to its rightful heirs, raising concerns about imminent construction. Despite reassurances from the municipality that the current detailed plan and the city’s General Plan did not allow for residential buildings in that area, residents remain skeptical about the future of their cherished park. The vice-mayor, Vytautas Mitalas, assured the community that the existing regulations classify the area as a greenery zone, which should protect it from development and preserve it for public enjoyment.
