Mongabay opens applications for environmental journalism scholarship

Journalists interested in environmental issues can apply for the Mongabay Environmental Journalism Scholarship program until March 31.

Mongabay has announced the opening of applications for its Environmental Journalism Scholarship Program, which aims to support journalists interested in covering critical environmental issues. Interested applicants can submit their applications until March 31, and the scholarship will provide practical training focused on topics such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and socio-environmental conflicts. This program will be conducted remotely over six months, from June 1 to November 30, 2026, with each participant receiving a monthly stipend of $500 throughout the duration.

Scholars will be expected to dedicate approximately ten hours per week to the program and produce, on average, one report per month. The curriculum includes training in environmental reporting techniques, story development, source interviews, journalistic writing, and discussions on ethics, safety, and journalist protection. The scholarship aims to delve into various topics, including forests, oceans, wildlife, agriculture, extractive industries, and the relationship between communities and nature, effectively equipping journalists with the necessary skills and insights to report on these vital issues from informed perspectives.

Moreover, this initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of environmental journalism in addressing urgent global challenges. By fostering a new generation of reporters with a focus on environmental issues, organizations like Mongabay are helping to highlight critical stories that may otherwise go unreported, thus contributing to a wider understanding and discourse around environment-related topics that affect communities and ecosystems worldwide.
