One of these five will become bishop in Stavanger
Five candidates have been nominated for the position of bishop in the Stavanger diocese.
The Stavanger diocese is currently in the process of selecting a new bishop to replace Anne Lise Ådnøy, who has announced her resignation effective April 2026. The five nominated candidates are Vidar Mæland Bakke, Stephanie Dietrich, Grethe Lystad Johnsen, Karen Margrete Eikenes Mestad, and Tor Magne Nesvik. Each nominee brings unique backgrounds and experiences that will be critical in fulfilling the responsibilities of this significant role within the church.
The process of selecting a new bishop is an important and often lengthy task, reflecting the values and direction of the diocese. Helene Breivik Hellerdal, the leader of the diocese’s council, expressed confidence in the strength of the candidate list, indicating that the council is unified behind the nominees. The selection process not only impacts church governance but also resonates with the local community and its spiritual leadership.
As Stavanger prepares to welcome a new bishop, the implications are far-reaching, encompassing not just ecclesiastical responsibilities but also engagement with community issues and leadership in a time of change within the Church of Norway. The new bishop will have the opportunity to shape the future of the diocese and address contemporary challenges faced by the church and its parishioners.
