Bishop election in Aarhus to go to a second round
The bishop election in Aarhus Stift did not conclude in the first round, necessitating a second round between candidates Thomas Frank and Esben Thusgård.
The bishop election in Aarhus Stift failed to conclude in the first round, as no candidate received more than 50% of the votes. Following the vote count revealed on Thursday afternoon, it was confirmed that only three candidates were in the running for the position, with no clear winner emerging. Annette Brounbjerg Bennedsgaard received 514 votes, Thomas Frank received 554, and Esben Thusgård led with 793 votes. Consequently, a second round of voting is necessary to determine the new bishop.
The forthcoming second round will take place on April 9, selecting between Thomas Frank and Esben Thusgård, who secured the most votes in the first round. The election is being conducted among members of the church councils, priests, and representatives of the election congregations within Aarhus Stift. The new bishop will succeed Henrik Wigh-Poulsen, who will retire at the end of April, making the outcome of the election particularly significant for the region's church leadership.
This election highlights the democratic process within the church and the engaged participation of the community in choosing their spiritual leaders. The transition to a new bishop is expected to bring fresh perspectives to the leadership of Aarhus Stift, reflecting the views and aspirations of its members as they move forward into a new chapter for their church and congregation.
