Few bishops demand same-sex weddings

A recent survey reveals that only four out of thirteen bishops in the Church of Sweden require their priests to officiate same-sex marriages.

A survey conducted by P4 Uppland and P4 Gotland highlights the stance of bishops within the Church of Sweden regarding same-sex weddings. Despite a collective statement made by the bishops in 2022 emphasizing the importance of inclusivity, only four of the thirteen bishops are actively demanding that all priests participate in same-sex marriage ceremonies. This reflects a divide in attitudes among the bishops concerning the acceptance of same-sex couples in religious practices.

Bishop Mikael Mogren from Västerås advocates for a clear approach, expressing satisfaction with the requirements of his diocese, which explicitly calls for inclusivity in officiating these ceremonies. In contrast, other bishops like Erik Eckerdal from Visby prefer a more inclusive and less prescriptive approach, indicating his desire to maintain a generous stance that embraces different viewpoints within the church.

This discrepancy in the requirements set forth by bishops could have significant implications for the relationship between the Church of Sweden and its parishioners, especially as societal attitudes towards same-sex marriage continue to evolve. The variation in enforcement of inclusive practices among bishops may also affect the church's unity and its ability to attract and retain members who seek a welcoming environment for all.
