Senate summons ex-NNPC boss Kyari over N210tn audit queries
The Nigerian Senate has summoned former NNPC CEO Mele Kyari over alleged misuse of N210 trillion by the company from 2017 to 2023.
On Thursday, the Nigerian Senate summoned Mele Kyari, the former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), in response to allegations concerning a staggering N210 trillion expenditure that remains unexplained between the years 2017 and 2023. The summons highlights growing concerns among lawmakers regarding the financial oversight and accountability of the national oil company, indicating a need for clarity on the alleged spending.
In addition to Kyari, the Senate has also invited former Chief Financial Officer Umar Isa and the former Group General Manager of the National Petroleum Investment Management Services, Bala Wunti, to provide their testimonies. The committee, responsible for overseeing this investigation, has expressed its willingness to escalate the situation should these former officials fail to appear, even considering the issuance of warrants of arrest. This underscores the seriousness of the matter and the Senate's commitment to ensuring accountability within the NNPC.
Furthermore, the committee has raised additional questions regarding a reported N5 billion expenditure linked to the rebranding of NNPC from the old Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to Nigerian NNPC Limited. This inquiry reflects a broader push by Nigerian lawmakers to scrutinize the operations and financial decisions of the national oil company, which has been under scrutiny for its handling of public funds and corporate governance. Overall, this situation may have significant implications for the future leadership and operations within Nigeria's petroleum sector.
