Senate summons Kyari and other former NNPCL bosses over N210tn expenditure
The Nigerian Senate has summoned former executives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited over allegations of mismanagement of N210 trillion in expenditures from 2017 to 2023.
The Nigerian Senate has taken significant steps to investigate the alleged mismanagement of N210 trillion by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), summoning former top officials including Mele Kyari, the former Group Chief Executive Officer. This comes in response to concerns raised by lawmakers regarding the lack of accountability for expenditures made by the national oil company over the last six years. The Senate committee overseeing the investigation has highlighted specific expenditures, such as the N5 billion spent on the company's rebranding from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, which raises further questions about fiscal responsibility.
As part of the probe, Senate committee members expressed frustration at the absence of proper accounts for the vast sums allegedly spent, which they believe should have been transparently managed, given the impact of oil revenues on Nigeria's economy. The inquiry emphasizes the critical need for accountability in the operations of entities handling the nationβs resources, especially in light of Nigeria's ongoing economic challenges.
Furthermore, the committee has threatened to issue arrest warrants for the summoned officials if they fail to appear for questioning, signaling the seriousness of the investigation. This situation underlines broader concerns regarding governance in Nigeria's oil sector and the accountability of public officials who manage state resources, and it may have significant implications for the country's energy policy and reform efforts moving forward.
