Mexico Cancels Streaming Accounts: ViX, Disney+, and Prime Video Register Nearly 2 Million Cancellations

The Mexican streaming market is experiencing a significant decline with almost 2 million subscription cancellations across major platforms due to intensified competition.

The Mexican streaming sector has recently entered a maturity phase characterized by heightened user turnover and increased subscription cancellations. The latest data indicates that a staggering 1,829,000 users have canceled their subscriptions to various streaming services over the past six months, constituting 14% of the total 14.3 million accounts on subscription video on demand (SVOD) platforms in the country. Among these, ViX Premium has seen the largest proportion of cancellations, accounting for 28.6% of the total, followed closely by Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video with 21.4% and 17.9% respectively.

According to Radamés Camargo, the Director of Analysis at the consulting firm The CIU, the increase in cancellations is largely attributed to the fierce competition among these streaming platforms, which is prompting users to rethink their subscriptions. The trend of heightened churn reflects a significant shift in viewer engagement as customers evaluate the value propositions of their subscriptions amidst a crowded market. As a result, other platforms like Apple TV and Netflix have also witnessed reductions in their subscriber base, indicating a broader industry challenge.

This wave of cancellations highlights the evolving landscape of the streaming industry in Mexico and raises questions about the future sustainability of these services in such a saturated market. The shift in user preferences may compel streaming providers to explore new content, flexible pricing strategies, and enhanced user experiences to retain customers and prevent further churn in this competitive environment.
