The Election Commission of India, led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, held a meeting in Kochi to discuss the upcoming assembly elections in five states and address issues such as fair elections, curbing money power, and considering local festivals.
The Election Commission of India has initiated preparations for the upcoming assembly elections scheduled for 2026 by holding discussions with major political parties in Kerala, specifically in Kochi. This meeting was led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and focused on critical topics including ensuring fair elections, addressing the influence of money in politics, and the need to consider local festivals during the electoral process. In a significant step forward, the Commission's team is set to visit West Bengal on March 9 and 10 to further this discussion, which may lead to the announcement of election dates for five different states.
Representatives from national parties including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Communist Party of India (Marxist) - CPI(M), and the Indian National Congress participated in the meeting. Additionally, leaders from regional parties such as the Communist Party of India (CPI), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Kerala Congress, and Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) were also present, showcasing a comprehensive representation of the political spectrum. Many political parties praised the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls currently being conducted in Kerala, emphasizing its importance for increasing voter participation and ensuring an accurate electoral list.
The discussions not only highlight the electoral roadmap ahead but also reflect the Election Commission's commitment to engage various political factions to ensure a robust democratic process. As the scheduled assemblies approach, the focus on practical issues like fair manipulation of financial influences and regional cultural considerations underscores the balancing act faced by election officials in India, especially in a diverse political landscape like that of Kerala and the anticipated elections in other states.
