Mystery of '50,000 Won 500 Bills' in Trash Bag... Found in Incheon, Owner Unknown

A large sum of cash was discovered in a trash bag in Incheon, South Korea, prompting police to search for its owner as little evidence has emerged regarding its origins.

In Incheon, South Korea, a significant amount of cash amounting to 25 million Won (approximately $19,000) was found packed in a trash bag near a villa complex. The cash, consisting of five bundles of 500 notes each of 50,000 Won, was discovered by a man in his 60s who was checking the bag for discarded clothing to collect. He noticed the tightly bound cash while going through the bag’s contents, leading to his immediate report to the authorities.

Upon receiving the report, local police began fingerprint analysis on the bundles; however, they have thus far been unable to identify a potential owner. Authorities have also issued notifications through lost property portals and local newspapers to help find the rightful owner. The police expressed concerns about how such a large sum of money ended up in the trash, investigating whether it could be simply a misplaced amount or linked to crimes such as fraud.

According to civil law in South Korea, if no owner claims the cash within six months, the finder can claim ownership of the money. With the exclusion of a 22% tax on miscellaneous income, the finder could potentially receive about 19.5 million Won. Should the true owner come forward, they would be entitled to a reward between 5% to 20% of the total cash amount, after accounting for tax deductions. The emergence of this case has generated significant public interest, questioning both the backstory of the cash and the potential legal ramifications surrounding it.
