Riga Zoo Could Be Merged with 'Riga Forests'
There are discussions about potentially merging the Riga Zoo with another municipal enterprise, but no official decisions have been made yet.
The Riga Zoo, managed by SIA 'Rīgas Nacionālais zooloģiskais dārzs', may be considered for merger with SIA 'Rīgas meži', as reported by Latvia Television. However, city officials have stated that it is too early to discuss such possibilities in detail, as the matter has not yet reached the relevant committees within the city council, and it remains uncertain when this will take place.
City Executive Director Jānis Lange confirmed that they are actively searching for viable solutions to implement a development plan for the zoo that extends up to 2035. This plan was formulated several years ago, and initial estimates indicated that around 40 million euros would be needed to enhance the zoo's facilities and management. However, securing such funds has proven challenging, prompting the city to explore various merger or collaboration options to prevent the zoo from stagnating and to transform it into a prominent attraction in Riga, one that citizens can take pride in.
Lange emphasized the importance of the zoo not just maintaining its current status, but also evolving into a jewel of Riga that could impress both locals and international visitors alike. Discussions regarding the financial and operational future of the zoo are ongoing, and officials are diligently considering their next steps while taking into account the best interests of the community and the zoo's long-term sustainability.
