Riga Zoo Could Be Combined with 'Riga Forests'

The Riga city executive director confirmed that various solutions are being sought to fulfill the Riga Zoo development plan until 2035, which requires significant investment.

City executive director Janis Lange announced that the Riga Zoo is looking for viable solutions to comply with its development plan set until 2035, which was devised several years ago and estimated a need for an investment of 40 million euros. However, he acknowledged that such funds are currently unavailable, prompting the search for alternative approaches to ensure the zoo not only maintains its current level but also develops into a source of pride for the city of Riga, attracting visitors and recognition from both locals and international guests.

Lange stressed that substantial investment is crucial for the zoo to boost its visitor numbers and offer more diverse exhibits. The financial resources presently allocated for its development are inadequate, with the national zoo being the smallest capital company under Riga's municipal governance. Its annual turnover is between 5 to 6 million euros, highlighting the stark contrast between the necessary funding for development and the current financial realities.

The ongoing discussions about the potential integration of Riga Zoo with 'Riga Forests' suggest a strategic move to enhance sustainability and resource allocation for both entities. As the city seeks innovative solutions to foster growth and ecological educational outreach, the future direction of the zoo will significantly impact Riga's cultural landscape and tourism appeal.
