Riga City Council decides to close and reorganize several schools and kindergartens
The Riga City Council has approved a plan to close and reorganize multiple educational institutions in the city by 2026.
The Riga City Council met on Wednesday to discuss and approve a major overhaul of the city's educational network, which involves closing and reorganizing several schools and kindergartens by 2026. This decision is part of an initiative to optimize the use of educational resources and improve infrastructure, including the development of sports facilities and outdoor spaces. Notably, the merging plan includes consolidating Riga's 74th elementary school with the 64th secondary school, which will now operate across three buildings, taking advantage of their proximity.
In addition to the previously mentioned schools, the merger will encompass the Riga 1st Christian elementary school with Riga's 6th secondary school, also resulting in a multi-building campus. Furthermore, Riga's Rīnūži secondary school and the 31st secondary school will be merged to create a new general education institution named Riga Vecmīlgrāvja secondary school. These consolidations aim to streamline administrative efforts and provide a better educational environment for students.
Looking ahead to 2027, additional mergers are planned, such as combining Riga's Broces licejs with the Sarkandaugavas elementary school, and merging the Gaiļezera elementary school with the Mežciems elementary school, among others. This approach not only seeks to improve educational quality and efficiency but also to adapt to changing demographics and resource availability within the municipality, ensuring that educational institutions can meet the needs of the community more effectively.
