Heavy rains in March will be frequent and intense: Will they surpass levels from previous years?

Ecuador is expected to experience frequent and intense rains in March, with existing forecasts indicating significant precipitation similar to or exceeding historical levels.

In March, Ecuador is bracing for an intense rainy season, according to forecasts from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inamhi). These predictions highlight a concerning trend of increased precipitation, potentially leading to severe weather phenomena such as thunderstorms. February witnessed numerous rain events, severely impacting various localities, particularly in the coastal regions, with Guayaquil being notably affected where heavy rainfall resulted in water accumulation in multiple sectors.

Between January and the beginning of March, Segura EP reported a staggering 548 weather-related incidents. Of these, a considerable majority were related to flooded roads, with 439 recorded events, along with 43 instances of flooding, 39 cases of fallen trees, and several structural collapses and landslides. Areas including Alborada, Sauces, Samanes, Atarazana, Kennedy, Garzota, and Urdesa have seen the highest concentration of incidents, prompting officials to increase operational efforts to address the impacts of these weather conditions.

In February, precipitation exceeded historical averages, indicating a worrying trend as the nation approaches March. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as they prepare for further challenges, urging communities to remain alert regarding severe weather. The economic implications of such weather patterns could be significant, affecting agriculture, infrastructure, and safety across affected regions as the government braces to manage the consequences of persistent and intensifying rainfalls in the upcoming month.
